Abbas the Terrorist: Welcome in the White House?

posted Wednesday, 12 January 2005

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, the right-hand man of the terrorist monster, Yasser Arafat, the man who  has supported Arafat in his crimes since they formed Fatah in 1965, is now welcome in George Bush's White House. It's the kind of thing many Americans feared would happy if Kerry had been elected. Abbas has not renounced terrorism, he has not opposed the PLO's slaughter of children and others over the years, he has not opposed the brutality of Arafat, even toward his own people. He is said to be a moderate because he recently stated that this moment was not the (right) time for killing, but has not opposed terrorism in principle. Indeed, he is complicit with Arafat in the terrorism of the PLO. Like Arafat, he is in no way a legitimate head of state who should be honored and recognized by the U.S. or the U.N., but we're not just rolling out the red carpet (recognizing, no doubt, his Ph.D. education in Moscow), but forking over millions of US taxpayer dollars to support this man in his quest for power - and quest for the destruction of Israel, which is what Fatah and the PLO have always been committed to above all.

Where is the Republican outrage that our leader would welcome and fund a man so tied to terrorism, a man who is part of the great evil of terrorism that we pretend to be fighting? For the young, brave American men and women we have sent to fight and, sadly, die in Iraq, there is no pretending: the danger is far too real. But if our government is not serious about the war on terror - if we will continue to welcome the PLO, if we will continue to ignore the support of China and other nations for our terrorist foes, if we will continue to endure a United Nations that puts terrorist states like Syria in the Security Council, if we will continue to ignore the flood of illegal aliens across our borders making it easier than ever for terrorists to enter our country - then we should not continue to ask our rising generation to die in a no-win war against terrorism. And America must demand that its top leaders do all that is possible to protect our soldiers and our American citizens (hint: we don't do that by stripping legal US citizens of their rights and privacy). We certainly don't do that by giving millions of dollars and international honor to anyone associate with the grandfather of modern terrorism, Yasser Arafat.

As a reminder on who Arafat was, how the international community has supported him in spite of blatant evidence of the terror he fueled, and what his Fatah and PLO are all about, please read Harris O. Schoenberg's A Mandate for Terror:The United Nations and the PLO (New York: Shapolsky Publishers, 1989). Though it's 16 years old, we need to review the lessons it teaches about the rise of the PLO and the United Nation's betrayal of its own Charter and principles to elevate Arafat and endorse his reign of terror. Feeding the lion more flesh will not make it a tame herbivore.
