The photographs in this album were taken by Jeff Lindsay of Appleton, Wisconsin to show some aspects of life for the Hmong people in the United States. This album goes with my main Web page on the Hmong people in America. Most of the people shown are friends of mine that I know through their involvement in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed "Mormons" - often misunderstood), but not all of them are members of the Church. Regardless of their religious status, all the Hmong people I know are proud of their cultural heritage, while also recognizing that there are some aspects of that which they need to leave behind. These photographs are copyright 2004, 2005, and 2006 JeffLindsay.com, and may not be posted elsewhere or reproduced without my permission.
The Hmong people have been the subject of genocide and violence. Americans often fail to understand how much the Hmong people did for us in the Vietnam War, helping to defend our soldiers and rescue our pilots by vigorously fighting for us in the secret wars of Laos. The story needs to be told.
Today Hmong Americans face new challenges. Some of them face complex run-ins with the law and may need lawyers to help them with puzzling legal problems they face. See, for example, the article, "Do Hmong Hunters in America Need to Hire Lawyers First?" Some may not know their legal rights and lack resources for help from lawyers. Some don't understand their rights and don't know what they can do to better protect and help their families over here. There is a need for all of us to work together to understand and help one another.
Above I show few photos of the Hmong people (guys and girls) from the Fox Valley valley of Wisconsin. This video was generated by Animoto, the free video service (with added features for pay).

I am Ben Wangxieng. I was born and in Laos nearby Longcheng, near the city
of General Vang Pao lived.
Eversince I grew up, I have comments and asked many elders about the war. I asked them because my family and I were moved from place to place to many cities. So, I asked why? Why can we settle into one place. The responded back were that we were moving like that for many years ago, from China into Laos.
I believe, my family is the few last people that escaped from Laos into Thailand late 1980.
We all escaped out from Laos because what I heard was General Vang Pao agreement contracted with the US to fight against the Vietnam. That was personal contract between General Vang Pao and the US but the King of Laos know nothing.
While the hmong has more money and more power helped by the US. General Vang Pao was one of the richest person in Laos.
While the Laos Government set up new law to keep all foreigns out of Laos, that's why General Vang Paos loss his power and escaped out of Laos. Since he get everyone involve into the secret war, he left, everyone will be kill. So everyone escaped after him.
Many Hmong people came to the US never have any education background. They can't speak, can't read or write. So they can't find a job. Many received Welfare fund to support the family.
Many hmong people strugle hard into education and work hard any firm or company that they got hire.
Many companies love to have hmong people to work for them. Eventhough, they got little pay but better than nothing.
Each culture carry on their own tradition and hmong traditions are what you have learned so far. Many hmong people believed in spiritual in 90%, they do anything to heal their pains. Only 10% hmong people involve into Christian and others.
As mentioned about married young, sacrified chickens and pigs or cows, because they used to be and just their spiritual thing or their way of tradition. Just like 90% US go to church every sunday and study bible.
It'll takes many years to get use to US system. I think, the younger generation are very much into US system.
Every culture and every family has a bad and a good person in the house, in the city or in the country.
Whatever Chai Vang get into, it's his problem, not all the hmong are killer. Many of them are trying very hard to be a better person with a clean record and a better life.
There are two groups, HMONG and MONG.
HMONG represent the White Hmong which wear dress white and more active into political and public relation. Which more courage, take risks take actions, and compite for leadership.
MONG, represent the Blue Mong. Which wear dress blue and red colorful. This group more calm, lease compite for leadership, nicer, avoide problem, is the majority of the population. If you visit hmong/mong in Laos, China, Thailand, and other countries you can tell by the clothes they wear and the way they walk, talks, and do things.
To learn more about HMONG/MONG, go to MONG.WS.
Any who offen about the above I said, I said what I
know the the true story behind the culture. I didn't try to put anyone
down or discourage anyone. If any missunderstand or interprete, you can
write to me.
I am one of the mong blood and try very hard to help the mong/hmong.

What a wonderful, wonderful site. My daughter has a very good friend of
the Yang clan (here in Boise, Idaho) and she and her family are just
completely wonderful. I greatly admire Hmong culture (I have some
experience thanks to dealing with Air America in Udorn, Thailand) and wish
we had more influence and presence here. I consider those areas where
Hmong have settled in greater numbers to have distinct advantages which we
won't have the luxury of having. In regards to the Wisconsin hunting
incident, while my heart goes out to the families of those killed, I am not
confident the accused will get a fair trial which will take life
experiences into consideration. We should all look at this incident as a
learning curve...yes, a tragic learning curve...on how we should all learn
to respect, understand, and show compassion to one another. Peace to
all.

To Jeff Lindsay. Do you think that just making a page about the Hmong
people makes up for all the wrong things you Americans have done to my
people? We “LOST” our land because you guys! So many Hmongs died and are

RE: MAIKUE YANG
I (some what) agree with you. I cannot stress enough about how much grief and pain our people went through. However, General Vang Pao was only doing what was best (at the time being). No one forseen the future and knew this was coming. I strongly agree that a lot of Hmongs died for a dying dream. In time, with patient and faith, Hmongs will get what we've been waiting for. A home.

1st of all, thanks jeff for recognizing us as a human race too. there are
so many controversal issues going on but it's great that some people do try
to understand this complex culture of ours. though many have lost their
lives, i think that we all can eventually learn from our mistakes. i agree
with maikue and jamie, we have many relatives that died during the war, but
we can't live in regret and hatred. love those who stand with us and in
unity and forgive those who cannot see beyond themselves...

Hi to my Hmongs. I'm not too old but not too young either. Not an educator
but not too leattery. Not too poor and not too rich but earned enought to
make a living. This is my messages to all the Hmong Americians youth whom
borned in the USA, We're the Youth whom faced two ways of our everyday
lives. We lives with our parents who faced the unknown for their future.
For some of our parents living everyday unknow how their kids going grow
up to be?, What riligion to belives?, whom to marry?, where to lives?. I
some times see they carries with runing tears of not knowing how their
youth wouldn't how much they have suffering to brough us to this great
country. I'm teared with in my heart that they have done for us so much
that we as their survices offsping couldn't ever repay for them. All you
could do is to show respect for your parents, and be pround of whom they
are.
Tries to lives with the gap,be there for each other, tries
understands that we the youth and they have to work together to make our
future a better one for boths side the New Hmong and the Old
Hmong......

When I was younger I was against and ashame of being Hmong. As I've gotten
older and understood the the culture from a different view, I've come to
realize how important it is to keep your roots intact. I don't understand
why people of this country can make racist and unjustified remarks of the
Hmong people and their culture. They have done nothing, but lived out their
lives the best they can. So that's why I question, what is an American?
America is not a generalized "White Country", it is a country that is
suppose to promote great opportunity and freedom. I see discrimination and
racism in this country among minorities everywhere. Since living in San
Francisco, I've been exposed to a great diversity of people, which have
opened my eyes to a variety of cultures and views. Many people are sad to
say still closed minded and should be educated in the subject of "racism"
and "discrimination". I hope that someday ignorant people will come to
realize the real meaning of being an American and not judge someone by the
color of their skin. We can only take actions into our own hands, so I hope
people go out there and make a big impact in their community. Thank you
Jeff for making this site to inform others of our people and culture. I
hope you well and good luck in the future. You are truly opening the eyes
of many. Thank you again.

Great site. I was refered here by my Hmong teacher, Ger Vang. I have been
married to my wife Chee for close to four years now and I have enjoyed
learning many aspects of the Hmong culture. I even paid the dowry to
Chee's parents out of respect to her family and culture.
Don't worry about "TheGhostfaceKillah". He is a racist who named himself after a rapper....sounds kind of confused to me.

I'm from Belgium and this Hmong story touched me a lot...its a shame...They
also helped France during Indochine war and they are forgotten too...how
N.U can't definitively get out Hmongs from that Situation ??? Its a shame
on U.N, U.S and the rest of the world !
Will do my best to be update about it and I really hope it will work out
for them.
hey there! I appreciate you putting your time to understand the hmong
people more. A lot of people these days are finally reconizing who we are
but they don't understand us. I'm hmong myself, but I hardly even know my
culture; I'm here trying to learn more about my people.. Thank you
many thanks to you creating this website. i think it tells alot about who
we are and why we are here.
Hi Jeff,i just want to thank you for giving us a voice. We are a
misunderstood people.When i tell people i am hmong.Most of them don't even
know what that is.
And here is to the hmong people out there, work hard, get an education, have
patients and persistent and you will succeed.Take advantage of the
opportunity giving to us from our parents and make them proud.my husband
and i are under 35,we own 4 houses, our goals is to be able to go back
someday and help our relatives in Laos.my dead brother is my inspiration.he
sacraficed his life to get me here and i'm going to make him proud from
heaven. Here is a poem i never forget from my 7th grade teacher.
"Never,never,never,never,never give up"
PEACE AND HAPPINESS TO ALL.
We are who we are. We just can't change that. No one can. We are Hmong
and that doesn't make it a differnet for anyone. We are one because we all
helped each other. Not just one of the other but all. We atleast try and
give a chance to help. I know that I'm still young. Living here in
America is different than Thailand i believe. But The WHITE doesn't have
the right to tell us to leave or want us to leave. We did out part for
helping the Americans. There isn't many people out there in the world will
help the Americans like us. I live in Merced, California. It's a really
small town but getting bigger. When I was a little girl. Going to school
at Charle Wright. I was told by other little kids to go back where I came
from. Which they believe that I was from Thailand or Lao. But I was born
here and I love living where I am. It might be small and all but I still
love it. Many people loves to live in big country or city like Sac. I
sure don't love it there because it takes too long just to go to the mall
or somewhere. Funny but I dont like to sit in the car for hours or 30
minutes just to go somewhere like the mall. I'm not into shopping and all.
But here I am. In high school, teenagers still telling me to go back
where I came from. Where am I suppose to go when I was born here in
America. I also realize that not Hmong marring Hmong. There many Hmong
out there that married different skin colors. If we were force to leave.
What will happen to the one that was born as a half hmong and half white?
What will happen to the one that has a mother/father that is a Hmong. What
will happen now. See people out there needs to realize that not just the
Hmong peoples out there going to hurt. It will be the whole Nation (Asian,
Black, White, and etc...) wide. There many things out there that some people
say when they don't even understand what they are saying. Thats why people
like us needs to understand to say things before we say it out. EVERYONE
has feelings and just one kind. Many people talk about us Asian should go
back to Asia. But the one thing is. Do they also realize that the Indians
are the one that was here first. Indians are also Asian like us people. We
are one. We're also known as Asian. So there no differences. It wouldn't
be right for us to tell other skins to leave too right? So no one has the
right to tell other to leave. I found this page while I was looking around
on yahoo about Hmong. Just looking for some stuff, i never knew that I
will find so much and mostly something like this. I don't hate any
different color of skin. I'm friends will every different kind of skins
because I accept them for who they are and not for the color of their
skins. Not like others that doesn't understand. Thank you alot for
understanding, even thought Thank You won't do much because it just a word.
But for now I can't give anything because I'm just still young and under
the age of 18. So all i can do or say is Thank You. God Bless you and
take kare.
Jeff, great pictures you have of the Hmong in Appleton, and knowing them
from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed "Mormons").
But the "Sanity Defense" is sending the wrong message about the Hmong,
which I tend to look at the website knowing first thing of hand reading the
"Sanity Defense" slogan --- this implies a negative view looking at the
beautiful pictures of the Hmong. I hope you can change that. Hmong Vang

great page u got here. It's nice of u to tell the world about us
hmong...but the way i see it, hmong will alway be scatter around the world
and it's all because of a war that "we" should of stay out of.i'm not stay
that it's america fault, but they should of left us alone. i turly believe
that america use the hmong to do their dirty work.the reason i said this is
because america just left "us" there in laos knowing that "we" do not have
a chance against them without modern weapon. i'm not tring to be racist or
anything, but i'm only saying the truth. I have one last question for
everyone who think america care about hmong. "WHY WEREN'T WE MENTION IN ANY
OF THE U.S ROCORD UNTIL THE LATE 80'S?" (Loas was also not inculded)
I am a third grade teacher in an inner city neighborhood in Massachusetts.
This summer my teenage children and I volunteered at one of the Heifer
International Farms. I picked up a Thailand Courtship Bauble and a Hmong
Heart Ornament at the International Gift Shop. The Hmong Heart ornament
did not have a story with it so when I went online to find out the
significance of this ornament, I discovered "Hmong" and a picture of the
handcrafted ornament. IF someone has written a children's book about the
Hmong people, please let me know. If no one has, perhaps a few Hmong
people could get together and teach us about their culture, heritage, and
plight! Where better to start educating others than at the elementary
level!
To MaiKue, whoever you may be, I think you should take your bitter attitude
somewhere else. This isn't the place for it. If you want to be bitter,
then stay bitter. The only way we can put this behind us, but not forget
it, is if we get rid of this bitter attitude.
hi remember what happn last year.... durN deer season... Chai killing 6
white men and injuring 3

Nyob zoo Jeff Lindsay,
In regards to Maikue Yang- You presented yourself in such an ignorant and
ill-mannered way, that I can’t help the fact but pity you for such grudges.
I’m not here to criticize you, I just felt the need to point out how you’re
just the same as any other intolerant person, classifying “Your kind, my
kind of people” as a whole by the color of their skin. Sorry, but that’s
just ridiculously hypocritical of you, don’t you think? I’m just asking you
to be more open-minded, if you will. Anyway, I believe Jasmine Cha did a
well job on explaining that on her part. And lastly, thanks to Jess Lindsay
for creating such a resourceful site. Not only for the Hmongs themselves,
but for everyone else.

Jeff, thank you for telling the world the truth about the Hmong.
Hello! First and foremost, I would like to thank you for taking the time
to appreciate the Hmongs. Thank you very much for this wonderful site and
interest you've taken in on the Hmong ethnic. My name is Jenny Yang and
I'm from Fresno, California. I'm happily married for about 1 year now and
I'm 21 years-old.
Hello Mr. Lindsay. Please do not let ignorant and stupid people discourage
you from doing wonderful work on behalf of the Hmong people. =) Your site
is a GREAT gift to the Hmong community. Rest assured that I, along with
many other Hmongs, greatly appreciate your sincerity and kindness toward
the Hmongs. May our thanks inspire you to continue doing what you are
doing.
Thank you for developing this website to enhance our knowledge and discover
what kind of people exist out there.
We are celebrating Hmong Festival at the Seattle Center in Seattle
Washington. The Hmong people are warm, hospitable and having the time of
their lives. We should try to learn about different cultures since our
world is shrinking all the time.
I am an Australian who goes yearly to Thailand. My sympathies are with the
Hmong peaple and i think it is dispicable the way the US Government and the
UN are ignoring the plight of those Hmong still on Laos.
I am surprised to read your stories of unhappiness and not nice treatment
in America, but at least you are all safe, so please be thankful for that,
you can sleep at night and know you will wake up safe and sound in the
morning.Once again i have to say that i feel that your peaple in Laos have
been deserted by America whose government does not seem to understand the
sacrifices you made for her during that war. Thailand is a poor but large
country so i think Taksin (the Thai president) should let you have a small
province to live and make your own home, possibly in the South somewhere,
All the finantial aspect could easily be managed by the USA, they can
always find money for wars! In return you could become good citizens of
Thailand and i am sure your young men could become EXCELLENT soldiers as
you have proven in the past,
serving in their army.Thank you Jeff for your time and efforts in making the plight of the Hmong peaple more public. I can understand their bitterness and feeling of desertion, but time will heal.I have learned a lot about the Hmong from reading the letters in this site and will certianly try to do something to help the refugees however small when i return to Thailand in the new year. Good luck to all of you and try to be happy for your childrens sake .........Dave L.
Great website Jeff, I have enjoyed it! (I hope you don't mind me posting
this open letter here):
WOW! I am speechless. This website is exceptionally well layed out with
information and pictures. I can't believe I ended up here from
wikipedia.com. Mr. Jeff Lindsay, I want to thank you for all the work you
have done about the Hmong people. Being a second generation Hmong I don't
even know that much about my culture, but after reading all the information
and research you have done made me feel good. I attend a small private
college in Minnesota and the majority of the population is caucasian. It's
really hard trying to explain what Hmong is and how they ended up
dispersing all over, but I think your website could chnage that. Again,
thank you SO much.
Toua T. Vang
Hmong New Year celebrations this year usually happens every weekend.
err...well, luv the site. think it needs more info tho. o well. great job.
=)
Hello Jeff and All Hmong People!
Hi, first off I would like to say thank you to Jeff for taking the time to
make this page and help us speak out for who we are. Now going through this
I read some interesting opinions, here's my opinion. To all of you out
there who says that they get mad when a white man tells them to go back to
thier own country. Here's my advice to you. There are always gonna ignorant
people, so therefor you should not let it bother you to much. You can
choose to be ignorant back if you want, but why? It is all on how you want
make your life. Don't let someones comment get into your train of thought
to lose your motivation in life. I'm not being passive or scared im just
stating that it is ridiculos to start or stir something thats isn't
nesecessary. On to next thoughts. Ohh TO HERBOI and his Quote "WHY WEREN'T
WE MENTION IN ANY OF THE U.S ROCORD UNTIL THE LATE 80'S?" (Loas was also
not inculded) Well the simple fact is that reason for it is because we
didn't make a name for ourselves until the 80's after the war was over no
one took action to say something about it. No one spoke out for us. If u
want to know about us Hmong people befor the 80's maybe you should stop
asking and start doing take the time to and research it. There are many
things about the hmong people before the 80's. Last comment about America
and who was actually here frist, now correct me if im wrong but I believe I
read some where that the Vikings where befor the indians they just never
claimed it. So therefore the indians(native americans) where not the first
ones here.

WELL SOME COMMENTS ABOUT THE CHAI STORY....I'M FROM MINNESOTA AND I LIVE
JUST RIGHT NEAR HIM! I THINK THAT IF WE ALL HMONG PEOPLE WORK FOR HIS
RIGHTS AND WE ALL WORK TOGETHER HE WILL BE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH IT!
EXAMPLE: HOMER SIMPSON! HA.....HE WAS CONVICTED OF KILLING HIS WIFE! AND
YOU KNOW WITH EVERYONE HELPING HIM....HAVING FAITH IN HIM ACTUALLY GOT HIM
OUT OF JAIL! AND ALL THE BLACKS WERE HAPPY! WHY CAN'T WE BE LIKE THAT! THE
BLACKS BEEN HERE FOR A LONG TIME! THEY WERE SLAVES....THEY WERE
TORTURED...KILLED....DISCRIMINATED! THEY ARE STANDING STRONG TODAY AND
HAPPY! IF WE ARE STONG THAN WE CAN DO IT!

Always be proud of who you are. Never let racial descrimination put you
down. We are Hmong. Even though we don't have a country, we still have
each other and for all of the children, your parents came here for a better
life. Don't do anything that would let them down. Work hard, go to school
because it's the number one thing for success in life. They brought you
here for a better life. They didn't have all the things you have now, so
work hard and give them what they want. Thank them and never be to afraid
to tell them you love them. Make them proud, so in their life they well
know they had a son or daughter that had a better life then i did. Don't
be embarrass of who you are, stay strong and live long because we are
Hmong.

Hi there. I am very HAPPY to see all your love and support for the Hmong
culture. I am a very open minded individual and I find it easily to accept
other's as they are. However with today's world it's hard to meet accepting
and compassionate people. Thanks for taking your time to voice your
thoughts about the HMONG people. I hope you continue to build your site for
others to see.
W/Love and Respect, Ms. Janie, 23 years old, mother of one, HmooB Oregon
Nice webpage Jeff. I really appreciate what you have done, because not a
whole lot of people would find Hmong people interesting, not even Hmong
people would put in as much energy as you did on studying about the Hmong
in the U.S. Keep it up and I hope someday I will be able to do what you
did.
I hope you live forever. Man! I just love the way you write about us Hmong,
I mean not even we write like that sometimes. Thank you so much!!
It is great how Hmong have been through so much and have overcome it :)For
the past few months I'd been wondering about Hmong backgrund and
traditions. This website is such a great insight. Keep up the great work.

Hey Jeff, since you're so interested in Hmong people, here's something I
think you might enjoy knowing about the "other" Hmong people who are still
left behind in Laos. It is a non-profit organization and my dad is running
it. You should check out the website, it's www.factfinding.org.
What I find amazing about your photo album is the "floating Hmong." It's
hilarious! :D Great job, it's nice to know there's someone out there like
you who'd care about the Hmong people and thank for trying to let everyone
know about us.
Bye!
I forgot to tell you, my dad's name is Ger Vang.
Awesome work Jeff. My brother-in-law served in the San Diego Hmong mission
and we have learned to love these great people. I love their food too.
Especially their egg rolls. Politics aside I am glad to have these great
people living in the U.S. I was in Philadelphia about a year ago and met a
Hmong woman selling the fine needlework they make. What a talent. They
are in more areas of the U.S. than I had thought. Thanks again for the
great photos and information on the fine Hmong people.
hi jeff,
i just wanted to thank you for your site and your wonderful pictures. i'm a
nursing student and am taking a human diversity course, in which we're
reading "the spirit catches you and you fall down". after beginning it, i
had to learn more about these fascinating people. thank you for sharing
their beauty and strength in these pages, and for giving me another
perspective into their history and modern culture.
I don't know about the rest of the Hmong out there, but I'm only one of a
few hand ful of Hmong out here in Boston. No, there is no Hmong community
here, but I have visited largely concentrated communities before. And from
what I see, here, and also read from the news, I feel that the 2nd and 3rd
generation Hmong Americans are not making the most of their lives and not
making names for ourselves so that we can be heard. I only see and hear
negative things when I hear about the Hmong. We can't blame anything on
our past, but to look onto the present and future. The majority of you are
limiting yourself to your culture and traditions and not going out and
being ambitious and the most that you can be so that we can be heard
positively. With all that's going on, as proud as I am to be Hmong, some
times, I'm embarassed to be Hmong. Hear me out though...look around,
compare the Hmong Americans to other Asian Americans...we are really behind
in almost everything. We have no one to blame but ourselves.
Hey John, I agree with you. I'm a student here at Brown University. I am
from St Paul and came out here to get away from the community for a while
to see how life would be like to be not solely relying on the community.
It was really weird at first, but I have gotten use to it. I have learned
a great deal more in these past 2 years being away from the community more
than I have all my years in St Paul. I've learned the history of my
people, I've even taught all of my Korean, Japanese, and Chinese friends
about the Hmong. But when they say that they hear about the Hmong here in
the US, it's always about killings and crimes. I've told them that the
Hmong is slowly changing, but in due time, Hmong Americans will thrive. We
are one of the hardest working people and have gone through many hardships.
But going back to what you say about the Hmong Americans not making the
most out of their lives, I can totally understand why you would say such a
thing. Had I went to Univ of Min instead, I would not have experienced
what I have and learned what I know today. I really hope the Hmong
Americans do change and see that life is not a game and getting too
comfortable in large Hmong communities is a limitation in life. The only
way to grow up would be to leave the nest and learn to be responsible and
learn how the world really works and how you can play a key part in making
something of yourself in society without sacrificing your origin and
culture. Good luck, I hope everyone who reads this blog does not take it
the wrong way.
Both of you are wrong. Stop bashing the Hmong if you are not proud to be
Hmong!
This is a great site you have. I live in Wausaw and there are a lot of
Hmong everywhere. Keep up the good work!
Nice, I like your pictures... It's very unlikely to see someone who would
care alot about us Hmong people. But I was wrong. There are some ones out
there...

Hi Jeff,
Hi Jeff,
Jeff,
Please don't take offense to this question, but why are you interested in the Hmongs and their culture? I'm sure there's a good reason but I would like to know. If you read the entries above, many of the Hmongs who wrote something stated that they've never seen/heard of a White or someone of another race so interested in the Hmong culture, and some even thought that no one even cared about Hmongs until they landed on your webpage. Throughout my life, I've never had seen/heard someone so interested in the Hmongs and their culture. Since you are, I would like to share something with you...
This year, I took an English course at my high school, "Expository Writing," and our first paper was a personal paper. There's nothing else more personal than friends, that I had a long time ago. When I first moved to Wisconsin, it was hard for me to make friends. We also kept moving back and forth (from one side of town to another side) and so I kept switching schools. In the 6th grade, something happened that I'll never forget. I made friends, three of them. Two were White and one was Hispanic. Pretty cool? Two White boys, one Hispanic, and one Orient hanging out together like brothers. Well, in middle school, we were all seperated because of the classes we took and the hours we had each class so the communicating simply slowed down. After the seventh grade, we moved again, so I changed middle schools. Two years later, in high school, we were all together again, but again, we had no classes together. To this very present day, we walk past each other in the hallways and we don't even say hi. Also, the older I get, I start noticing people becoming less colorblind. At my high school, unlike elementary school, all of the Asians sit together at lunch, same with the Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, etc. Ofcourse, within each racial group, it's further divided, but anyone can easily tell people sit by their own racial group. It's so hard making new White friends, and harder to make Hispanic friends. It's funny how colorblind children are.
Another thing I want to share with you, all my life, none of my teachers ever bothered to teach about Hmongs and where they come from. That may be the reason why so many non-Hmongs don't know why Hmongs live in the United States. Well, it all changed when I stepped into my "World History" classroom. I didn't expect the teacher to teach about Hmongs and their origination. I, along with other Hmong classmates willing to participate, prepare a little feast of Hmong food for the class. The funny thing is that the other "World History" teacher does not teach about Hmongs.
Many people ask me, what religion do I believe in? Well, I'm not religious, so that's a hard question to answer. But I believe a little bit of this and that. My parents believe in Shamanism (Hmong religion), but I simply believe a little bit of Shamanism, Christianity, Buddhism, etc. I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but I guess I was born to be colorblind.
I thank you for your sympathy for the Hmongs. God will bless you.

Thanks for understanding the Hmong people. Not alot of people understand
where we come from, or why we're even in the United States. People should
be more like you Jeff. I hope that others would start to accept one
another.

Hi Jeff. I see that those who came here left good comments while others
maybe be a little too offensive. Some are understanding and some may be
ignorant. I hope that you will keep this up whether others thinks of it
less or not. I feel it is something you do for your understanding, and for
that others will see it for themselves.
Thank you for the website. Somehow I came across it looking for other
things (and I'm really glad I did!). It's truly put some sense into me
being a Hmong American. I appreciate your efforts in educating Americans
and the Hmong generation growing up in the U.S. Education is the best
resource for ignorance.... THANK YOU.
Oh my goodness, so many Yangs!! Any way, great site here. After reading
basically all the comments, I just realized how little some Hmong people
know about their own culture. So much for all those chanting, yelling,
screaming and whatsoever about Hmong Pride. Why say something like that,
when you do not even know what it is to be Hmong? Somewhat of a rhetorical
question I guess. To me, To be Hmong, is to be Free.
I am sad, yet not completely shocked at how little Hmong people know their
own history! I too, am guilty of knowing little about my God-given heritage
as a Hmong American woman. Not forgetting of course, that my first and
truest identity has always and will always be found in who Christ is.
Because of that I am not confused about who I am and what my purpose is. I
am a first generation Hmong American child. I can't fully express what life
was like growing up being thwarted between my Hmong culture at home and the
majority culture that surrounds us. Trying to balance the two competing
ways of life, but never being able to find that middle ground. Perhaps
there is non. One must overshadow the other eventually. My desire to hold
onto that beautiful part of who I have been so blessed to be as a Hmong
woman is often found diluted by the majority culture. Does the struggle
sound familiar? A bit like Darwin's theory of "survival of the fitest" eh?
Perhaps. But I am a creationist. Fact of the matter is that Hmong people
are a unique group of miniorities. Minority of the minorities as I like to
put it. We may seem like a large number where there is a high concentration
of Hmong settlers, but in other...or most places around the world and US,
we are drowned out by our little number. One of my goals in life have been
to learn how to read and write in my own native language just as well if
not better then my second language, English. And a tribute to my parents
and God that I will stay true to my roots as a proud Hmong American
Christian woman despite the fact that the Hmong culture is slowly
progressively dissapearing. I can only hope that this will encourage and
empower my fellow Hmong people to never forget who they are though they
live in a society that begs for conformity. And we are beautiful in God's
eyes so don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise!!!
Hi Jeff!
I just wanted to let you know about how touching your website was to me.
Thanks so much for taking the time and consideration of putting something
like this up for the hmong people. I'm sure it has been a huge help to many
different people reguarding different cultures as well :] So please keep up
the good work and God Bless!!
Jeff I want to thank you for taking your time and effort, not just for this
website(which is ggggreat by the way) but for learning, understanding, and
teaching America about Hmongs. We have suffered and lost so much, but we
must stop living in the past. We must move on, start over, and as we move
on we must not forget who we are and where we came from. I am proud to be a
Hmoob and a American. We will stay strong and ignore what other nasty
people has to say about us, because we all know that we are nothing like
that. My grandfarther didn't lose his family and serve this country so
that I can be here and be discriminated for false shits, he did it so that
I can be FREE! Thank you Jeff and may god bless you!

Hey folks
Love wat ya did 2 dis pagie!!! (holla!!!)
Surprisingly, I stumble upon your site. I have to admit I’m not as computer
savvy as I thought or I've would've stumble upon it sooner. I would just
like to comment on a job well done, documenting a brief history of our
hidden past. I, myself like other hmong are first generation. I’ve grown up
despise being called hmong or just being known as hmong. As I grew older
I’ve learned to cherish the tradition and the culture. Although, I disagree
with a majority of the elder’s point of view. But over-all I’ve come to
comprehend the culture and I think it should be pass on to our kids, kids
and so forth. No nationality should ever forget their root or their
culture. Instead of neglecting our culture to be Americanize, we should
adopt the Americanism into ours. Just like the Jews, Blacks, Indians, and
other nationalities. For the good or the bad, they never forgot their
heritage, and us hmong should do the same.
This is an extremely wonderful site that you have here. Many people always
wondered what hmong is and never really understood the cultures and where
they are from, but you are unbelievable. you understand it all and it
brings warmth to my heart to know that there are people like you out there
who are willing to learn more about our culture. I understand how hard it
must be to make the hmong people understand, but more and more, the newer
hmong generation is adapting to more of the american ways. Thanks for all
your help. Maybe you could visit us in florida one day and see how our new
year is. Greatest thanks to you and God bless! -Goe
The Hmong are beautiful people. Their culture is a wonderful addition to
the melting pot of our great nation. Do not lose sight of your history and
beginnings as they are proud. Your path forward is a thin line between
becoming US citizens of North America (other people live here too) and
honoring your cultural roots. We all need to learn to love the differences
in each other and lovingly welcome all who want to join in our ways. Our
proudest moments as a Nation are when we add another culture to our midst.
Teach and learn from each other forever; the time is short.

I am ashamed to say I had never heard of Hmong until a friend sent me this
site. I've been enlightened. I feel very sad for your history, but very
happy that you've found a home here in the U.S.
You should be a very proud people, for you are courageous, have endured
much, yet remain beautiful inside (as well as outside).
Thank you so much for sharing this site so all may learn of the Hmong!
I am so sad and completely shocked while I read my Hmong brother and
sisters post. I am so shocked that why my hmong brothers and sisters not
know a little of their Hmong people history! WHen i read from a hmong
brother wrote about VP was the richest in Laos due to the power and help by
the US. And he lost his power while Laos change his politic. I am totally
disagree and would like to let you Hmong brothers and Hmong sister know
that, if VP not the one who build the bridge and has good relation with the
US CIA, then our Hmong people will never have a little chance to come to
US. Those who did not know why your parent have to escapt from places to
places and and up to settle in US because maybe your father, brother, uncle
or close family are serve for the US CIA. VP not came to US because he
lost his power to Laotian people. I was born in late 70 but i am so
appreciated my Hmong leader and thier honest to bring the Hmong people the
brightness fulture and have the opputinities to learn and caught their
dream and education they have dream off. My Hmong people, please DO Not
forgetting our Hmong identity and your cutural and custom. Please do not
cofused about who you areB. It does not matter if you are the first
generation Hmong American child. I can't fully express what life was like
growing up being thwarted between my Hmong culture at home and the majority
culture that surrounds us. Trying to balance the two competing ways of
life, but never being able to find that middle ground. Perhaps there is
non. One must overshadow the other eventually. My desire to hold onto that
beautiful part of who I have been so blessed to be as a Hmong man is often
found diluted by the majority culture. Does the struggle sound familiar? A

I think that some of these comments are alright, but no one can come onto
our traditions discriminating us and telling us what to do.
This message illustrating the path may be the disfavored's last clue. All
clues before have been more covert but this one is quite obvious indeed,
which says time is running out.

Thanks and have a good holiday season.

living in the states almost all my life you tend to wonder how things once
were back in thailand and wonder if it was for the best of all our interest
to help the US in the vietnam comflict? well i suppose its up to us as
individuals to determine that on our own. depending on where and how you
all grew up. segergation and racism not only tears this country apart it
divides our public schools even to this day. my younger brother in middle
school goes through these hardships everyday and myself while in college at
the time saw racism in the upper levels of the academics, people...we're
partly into the new millenium now isn't it time to just look past the face,
color and culture and see that all are one. i hope one day soon all can
come together and have a sensible conversation with one another without
people blurting out senseless nonsense. my sister took the first step in
obtaining this peace with the marrage to a white male..my brother in-law...
now its our turn to take a step.. whether it be just making friends of
talking to a new classmate, we have to take the first step and not wait for
someone else to do it. thats the only ways we'll ever see any improvement
in our lifetime.
Dear Mr LINDSAY,
Congratulations with you very intersting website.
As the president of a small French Humanitarian non political, non
religious NGO, our aim is "to provide help and assistance to Hmong people
persecuted inside Laos or refugeed in the neighbourhood countries". Why ?
because, far beyond geostrategical or political consideration (though
helpfull to understand theit situation), the Hmong are also our brothers,
they gave us their heart and their blood when we, the French, asked fo
their help, as well as the Americans after us.
We have managed to meet Hmong refugees, in the northern Thailand Phetchabun
district : 7 000 people, provisory settled in Huay Nam Khao, are waiting
for international assistance, while 20 000 Hmong are still being chased and
slaughtered in the northern Laos mountains, scattered in a dozen of groups,
in permanent move, because of soldiers shooting them like animals.
There is still a lot of work to do to avoid the Hmong Huay Nam Khao
refugees to be "repatriated" by force to Laos, and to save the ones still
trapped in the north Laos jungle.
For us, solidarity has no fronteer.
So we must act concretely to save them.
So we are asking for Hmong and their friends all over the world to stand up
and act in a HUMANITARIAN purpose.
For further information, we have an english version of our first 2006
newsletter, that I can send anyone who wil ask me on my mail :
contact@uhasie.org.
Thanks in advance for your help.
With deep Respect and Kindest regards from FRANCE.
Remi FRITSCH.

wow... I really Appreciate the fact that there are people out there other
than THE HMONG that care about their background or who they are or where
they came from.. because since I live in the New England of United States
there's not that many Hmong over here and everytime when someone would ask
what nat. I am, I'll tell them I'm Hmong.. they'll ask me "What's Hmong?"..
"Where are they from?" then to make them understand I'll say my parents are
from Laos.. then they'll say "oh your Laos." I'm just like not really but
is ok.. Well, I didn't have to write this but is just a little sometthing
saying Thank You for your support. And really I didn't understand my
background until last year when I heard about what was going on in the
Midwest about supporting the HMONG and what i just read on here.. Thank
You for making it a better understanding for me.
wow..this is fantastic. i never thought the hmong people would ever be
posted up on sites like this. especially when made from another culture,
very admired it.
oops..im so excited i spelled my name worng..hehe
when i read about people killing us hmongs, i wanna grab a gun and shoot
them down.
when i read about people helping us hmongs, i wanna grab their hand and
help them.
Wow..these are kewl pictures..love them..
After the Hmong fled from China, the Laos government allowed the Hmong to
live in Laos, giving them the privilege to be laos citizens. I do not
understand how big of an impact that the Hmong had on the Vietnam War, when
many other countries were also involved. Many laotians, vietnamese, and
cambodians have also been greatly effected by the Vietnam War. From what I
have read, the Laotians has not put much input in what the Hmongs have
done; unless their input was not included or have been ignored. From recent
news, a select few that are Hmong have tried to overthrow the Laos
government by pulling an unexpected dramatic stunt; this, i still can not
comprehend because Laos is still under a communist rule. I have been
leading myself into questions such as, what is the Hmong's initial goal? Do
they want freedom in laos? but to those that are still living there, they
must still obey the laws like every other laos citizen. Do they want to
take over Laos? Why do they want the whole world to know "their" story,
when other citizens from other countries have been impacted also? Here is
another question, what about the yao? The "mien" people also lived in Laos,
they are also another group. They have also been impacted by the war, but
have reserved themselves.
I'm a white American from San Diego CA, and in the last few years I've been
spending a lot of time in Asia. I speak 6 Asian languages, primarily
Chinese (Mandarin), Thai, and Hindi, but also Korean, Japanese, and
Cantonese. Also a little Lao, or rather Isaan.

I know that I probally have no right to say this but I am going to anyway,
why dwell on the past? If you hate us white people because of something
that happened many years ago. why are we still suffering for something we
didn't do. I was born then, but I was to little to understand what it was
all about, But you don't see me running around hating everyone cause of
something that happened years ago. My mother is German she was alive during
hitlers rain (sp?) should she be mad at everyone who was involved with the
natzies, should she run around screaming your people killed my people? do
you know why she doesn't? because she's not living in the past she's not
trying to show hate toward those who even though they were there or someone
from thier family was there, she doesn't hate them. in fact it gives her
someone to talk too, (She likes speaking german) and not to mention she
made a life long friend from someone who was fighting for the other side.
(who recently passed away from cancer) So why can't we look passed the
wrong doings of people who screwed up and just move on?
I think i'm a mong type, but not sure. Anyways, i would also die trying to
proctecking my land and family. Hmong person here.
this is a great thing that you guys are doing and i like the pictures and
one more thing that one boy is cute!!!
To the # 189. How would u feel, if u never know about your past. What you
are, where u comes from, and u will never learn from your mastake if u
don't have a past. The Past is what maks us completes, and its to tell us
who we are. Pluse, if u don't know about the past, would u ever know that
Hmong means "Free"?
hey jeff, you are doing a great thing! keep up the good work.
First and for most...Thank you very much Jeff for a wonderful page and your
dedication. This page is a great resource for all young Hmong Americans.
>>>I am a little confused as far as some of the comments written
here. I know that Hmong ppl have gone through tremendous amount of
hardship being here in the United States and trying to get here. Although,
there has been wrongful doings to our population, we need to learn to stick
together. I am not proud that I've lost my language but I love who I am
and where I originated. We need not to judge and criticize thy self and
others but learn to compromise and adapt.
>>>As far as comment #189...who ever you are, you really need to
think twice about your view on things. To say such things only means that
you do not understand and is very unaware of our culture and what is still
going on presently. We are not dwelling, we are trying to make a
difference for our population here and back in Asia.
(If any would like to comment me back, I would love to hear what my peers
and or elders have to say skoogurl1025@hotmail.com)
Hey Jeff,
I'm happy there are people like you who want to let others know about Hmong
people. That is because I believe more people need to know about how Hmong
people helped others. Just want to thank you for representing us Hmong
people and telling others. You're doing a good job, keep up the good work
hey wat ish dis all about...LOL i guess its representing us hmong peeps hea

life sucks living in a races community. i never knew in my life that the
world can be so races. i use to live in sacramento, CA. where there was a
mix community between asians, black, mexican, whites, hindu, tongies, and
others. everybody got along really well there were no races commets at all,
when we did say something races, we were just playing around and joking
around. but now that i move up to Wiconsin not that i want to its because i
have to. i see that the world is so races. because over here theres not
that much hmong or should i say asians as much as other places. things
change for me. now my view of life is so different from how it once was,
and i dont think it will ever come back.. dammn.. world...>>>>
hey i see myself! hello brother lindsey! i miss
coming to church a kot, i hope i get to come
and visit you guys very soon!
Mr. Jeff Lindsay,
I want to thank you for the great job that you're doing. I am a soldier of the united states. I am also currently deployed. Well i can safely say that i am not fighting this war of ours in Iraq for the hmong people or even for the american people...but i am fighting this fight for the people of the united states. I am happy to see such a site that is so dedicated to the hmong. I have search many times to find out my own background as a hmong. I have ask the elders and even ask a few young ones... Seeing such a site with so many wonderful info on the hmong and see how many facts it holds makes me as a hmong proud. Keep up the good work on everything that you do because every great thing that happens start off with one person...
Thank you, Mr. Lindsay, for writing about The Hmong People. Your interest
in writing about them was without malice, and it has touched my heart. In
addition, I have also read everyone's comments, and I too would like to put
in "my two pennies worth." For the sake of the readers of this piece of
writing, I would like reveal that my origin is of The Hmong People.
I believe that everyone has a free will, whether they are Hmong or they are
of another decent. No one group of people, in this case separated by color
or race, can be considered better or worse than another group. For
example, the idea that Hmong people are good because they assisted and
fought alongside American soldiers against Communism during the Vietnam War
is a perception. What do you really think the Vietnamese Communists
thought of the Hmong? The reverse can be said also. Could you, with a
clear conscience, say that all Hmong people are wicked because one Hmong
man killed some individuals, who were not of his ethnicity, while deer
hunting? Some people will do bad things sometimes, but absolutely not all
people will do bad things all the time and vice versa. Let’s own up to our
responsibilities as individuals and as human beings let’s put aside the
concept of color and race. I know we will never all get along, but let us
try, and if we fail let us do so without prejudice.
Thank you all for your time and may your angels watch over you always.
