Photographs of the Hmong People in Wisconsin

posted Sunday, 12 March 2006

The photographs in this album were taken by Jeff Lindsay of Appleton, Wisconsin to show some aspects of life for the Hmong people in the United States. This album goes with my main Web page on the Hmong people in America. Most of the people shown are friends of mine that I know through their involvement in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed "Mormons" - often misunderstood), but not all of them are members of the Church. Regardless of their religious status, all the Hmong people I know are proud of their cultural heritage, while also recognizing that there are some aspects of that which they need to leave behind. These photographs are copyright 2004, 2005, and 2006 JeffLindsay.com, and may not be posted elsewhere or reproduced without my permission.

The Hmong people have been the subject of genocide and violence. Americans often fail to understand how much the Hmong people did for us in the Vietnam War, helping to defend our soldiers and rescue our pilots by vigorously fighting for us in the secret wars of Laos. The story needs to be told.

Today Hmong Americans face new challenges. Some of them face complex run-ins with the law and may need lawyers to help them with puzzling legal problems they face. See, for example, the article, "Do Hmong Hunters in America Need to Hire Lawyers First?" Some may not know their legal rights and lack resources for help from lawyers. Some don't understand their rights and don't know what they can do to better protect and help their families over here. There is a need for all of us to work together to understand and help one another.

I am Ben Wangxieng. I was born and in Laos nearby Longcheng, near the city of General Vang Pao lived.

Eversince I grew up, I have comments and asked many elders about the war. I asked them because my family and I were moved from place to place to many cities. So, I asked why? Why can we settle into one place. The responded back were that we were moving like that for many years ago, from China into Laos.

I believe, my family is the few last people that escaped from Laos into Thailand late 1980.

We all escaped out from Laos because what I heard was General Vang Pao agreement contracted with the US to fight against the Vietnam. That was personal contract between General Vang Pao and the US but the King of Laos know nothing.

While the hmong has more money and more power helped by the US. General Vang Pao was one of the richest person in Laos.

While the Laos Government set up new law to keep all foreigns out of Laos, that's why General Vang Paos loss his power and escaped out of Laos. Since he get everyone involve into the secret war, he left, everyone will be kill. So everyone escaped after him.

Many Hmong people came to the US never have any education background. They can't speak, can't read or write. So they can't find a job. Many received Welfare fund to support the family.

Many hmong people strugle hard into education and work hard any firm or company that they got hire.

Many companies love to have hmong people to work for them. Eventhough, they got little pay but better than nothing.

Each culture carry on their own tradition and hmong traditions are what you have learned so far. Many hmong people believed in spiritual in 90%, they do anything to heal their pains. Only 10% hmong people involve into Christian and others.

As mentioned about married young, sacrified chickens and pigs or cows, because they used to be and just their spiritual thing or their way of tradition. Just like 90% US go to church every sunday and study bible.

It'll takes many years to get use to US system. I think, the younger generation are very much into US system.

Every culture and every family has a bad and a good person in the house, in the city or in the country.

Whatever Chai Vang get into, it's his problem, not all the hmong are killer. Many of them are trying very hard to be a better person with a clean record and a better life.

There are two groups, HMONG and MONG.

HMONG represent the White Hmong which wear dress white and more active into political and public relation. Which more courage, take risks take actions, and compite for leadership.

MONG, represent the Blue Mong. Which wear dress blue and red colorful. This group more calm, lease compite for leadership, nicer, avoide problem, is the majority of the population. If you visit hmong/mong in Laos, China, Thailand, and other countries you can tell by the clothes they wear and the way they walk, talks, and do things.

To learn more about HMONG/MONG, go to MONG.WS.

Any who offen about the above I said, I said what I know the the true story behind the culture. I didn't try to put anyone down or discourage anyone. If any missunderstand or interprete, you can write to me.

I am one of the mong blood and try very hard to help the mong/hmong.

What a wonderful, wonderful site. My daughter has a very good friend of the Yang clan (here in Boise, Idaho) and she and her family are just completely wonderful. I greatly admire Hmong culture (I have some experience thanks to dealing with Air America in Udorn, Thailand) and wish we had more influence and presence here. I consider those areas where Hmong have settled in greater numbers to have distinct advantages which we won't have the luxury of having. In regards to the Wisconsin hunting incident, while my heart goes out to the families of those killed, I am not confident the accused will get a fair trial which will take life experiences into consideration. We should all look at this incident as a learning curve...yes, a tragic learning curve...on how we should all learn to respect, understand, and show compassion to one another. Peace to all.

To Jeff Lindsay. Do you think that just making a page about the Hmong people makes up for all the wrong things you Americans have done to my people? We “LOST” our land because you guys! So many Hmongs died and are still dying today because of you guys. I regret that my people helped your people out. Risking their lives to save your kinds and putting their trust in the US. That was that biggest mistake that Vang Pao made in his life.

RE: MAIKUE YANG

I (some what) agree with you. I cannot stress enough about how much grief and pain our people went through. However, General Vang Pao was only doing what was best (at the time being). No one forseen the future and knew this was coming. I strongly agree that a lot of Hmongs died for a dying dream. In time, with patient and faith, Hmongs will get what we've been waiting for. A home.

1st of all, thanks jeff for recognizing us as a human race too. there are so many controversal issues going on but it's great that some people do try to understand this complex culture of ours. though many have lost their lives, i think that we all can eventually learn from our mistakes. i agree with maikue and jamie, we have many relatives that died during the war, but we can't live in regret and hatred. love those who stand with us and in unity and forgive those who cannot see beyond themselves...

Hi to my Hmongs. I'm not too old but not too young either. Not an educator but not too leattery. Not too poor and not too rich but earned enought to make a living. This is my messages to all the Hmong Americians youth whom borned in the USA, We're the Youth whom faced two ways of our everyday lives. We lives with our parents who faced the unknown for their future. For some of our parents living everyday unknow how their kids going grow up to be?, What riligion to belives?, whom to marry?, where to lives?. I some times see they carries with runing tears of not knowing how their youth wouldn't how much they have suffering to brough us to this great country. I'm teared with in my heart that they have done for us so much that we as their survices offsping couldn't ever repay for them. All you could do is to show respect for your parents, and be pround of whom they are.
Tries to lives with the gap,be there for each other, tries understands that we the youth and they have to work together to make our future a better one for boths side the New Hmong and the Old Hmong......

When I was younger I was against and ashame of being Hmong. As I've gotten older and understood the the culture from a different view, I've come to realize how important it is to keep your roots intact. I don't understand why people of this country can make racist and unjustified remarks of the Hmong people and their culture. They have done nothing, but lived out their lives the best they can. So that's why I question, what is an American? America is not a generalized "White Country", it is a country that is suppose to promote great opportunity and freedom. I see discrimination and racism in this country among minorities everywhere. Since living in San Francisco, I've been exposed to a great diversity of people, which have opened my eyes to a variety of cultures and views. Many people are sad to say still closed minded and should be educated in the subject of "racism" and "discrimination". I hope that someday ignorant people will come to realize the real meaning of being an American and not judge someone by the color of their skin. We can only take actions into our own hands, so I hope people go out there and make a big impact in their community. Thank you Jeff for making this site to inform others of our people and culture. I hope you well and good luck in the future. You are truly opening the eyes of many. Thank you again.

You asked if my page makes up for the suffering of the Hmong people. Hey, I never said it makes up for anything. Would you be happier if we took my page down and just told people to forget about the Hmong people? Look, I think your attitude is just way too bitter. Don't make being a victim your focus in life - you will get no where.

I don't mean to be offensive, but I let me use an analogy to explain what bothers me about your comments. If you give a person a cheap gift, should that person spit on you and ask if they think that gift makes up for all the suffering they've had, or should they say thank you with a smile? Learn to be grateful for even worthless gifts - at least someone was trying to be nice.

We are who we are. We just can't change that. No one can. We are Hmong and that doesn't make it a differnet for anyone. We are one because we all helped each other. Not just one of the other but all. We atleast try and give a chance to help. I know that I'm still young. Living here in America is different than Thailand i believe. But The WHITE doesn't have the right to tell us to leave or want us to leave. We did out part for helping the Americans. There isn't many people out there in the world will help the Americans like us. I live in Merced, California. It's a really small town but getting bigger. When I was a little girl. Going to school at Charle Wright. I was told by other little kids to go back where I came from. Which they believe that I was from Thailand or Lao. But I was born here and I love living where I am. It might be small and all but I still love it. Many people loves to live in big country or city like Sac. I sure don't love it there because it takes too long just to go to the mall or somewhere. Funny but I dont like to sit in the car for hours or 30 minutes just to go somewhere like the mall. I'm not into shopping and all. But here I am. In high school, teenagers still telling me to go back where I came from. Where am I suppose to go when I was born here in America. I also realize that not Hmong marring Hmong. There many Hmong out there that married different skin colors. If we were force to leave. What will happen to the one that was born as a half hmong and half white? What will happen to the one that has a mother/father that is a Hmong. What will happen now. See people out there needs to realize that not just the Hmong peoples out there going to hurt. It will be the whole Nation (Asian, Black, White, and etc...) wide. There many things out there that some people say when they don't even understand what they are saying. Thats why people like us needs to understand to say things before we say it out. EVERYONE has feelings and just one kind. Many people talk about us Asian should go back to Asia. But the one thing is. Do they also realize that the Indians are the one that was here first. Indians are also Asian like us people. We are one. We're also known as Asian. So there no differences. It wouldn't be right for us to tell other skins to leave too right? So no one has the right to tell other to leave. I found this page while I was looking around on yahoo about Hmong. Just looking for some stuff, i never knew that I will find so much and mostly something like this. I don't hate any different color of skin. I'm friends will every different kind of skins because I accept them for who they are and not for the color of their skins. Not like others that doesn't understand. Thank you alot for understanding, even thought Thank You won't do much because it just a word. But for now I can't give anything because I'm just still young and under the age of 18. So all i can do or say is Thank You. God Bless you and take kare.

love and respect,

Sammy Yang

Jeff, great pictures you have of the Hmong in Appleton, and knowing them from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed "Mormons"). But the "Sanity Defense" is sending the wrong message about the Hmong, which I tend to look at the website knowing first thing of hand reading the "Sanity Defense" slogan --- this implies a negative view looking at the beautiful pictures of the Hmong. I hope you can change that. Hmong Vang

great page u got here. It's nice of u to tell the world about us hmong...but the way i see it, hmong will alway be scatter around the world and it's all because of a war that "we" should of stay out of.i'm not stay that it's america fault, but they should of left us alone. i turly believe that america use the hmong to do their dirty work.the reason i said this is because america just left "us" there in laos knowing that "we" do not have a chance against them without modern weapon. i'm not tring to be racist or anything, but i'm only saying the truth. I have one last question for everyone who think america care about hmong. "WHY WEREN'T WE MENTION IN ANY OF THE U.S ROCORD UNTIL THE LATE 80'S?" (Loas was also not inculded)

I am a third grade teacher in an inner city neighborhood in Massachusetts. This summer my teenage children and I volunteered at one of the Heifer International Farms. I picked up a Thailand Courtship Bauble and a Hmong Heart Ornament at the International Gift Shop. The Hmong Heart ornament did not have a story with it so when I went online to find out the significance of this ornament, I discovered "Hmong" and a picture of the handcrafted ornament. IF someone has written a children's book about the Hmong people, please let me know. If no one has, perhaps a few Hmong people could get together and teach us about their culture, heritage, and plight! Where better to start educating others than at the elementary level!

To MaiKue, whoever you may be, I think you should take your bitter attitude somewhere else. This isn't the place for it. If you want to be bitter, then stay bitter. The only way we can put this behind us, but not forget it, is if we get rid of this bitter attitude.

It may be a reason for why you work so hard, but for others, it may be entirely different. You remind me of the first comment in the Hmong shooting tragedy article. You're ignorant. Grow up. Please.

To Jeff, thank you for helping spread our story and our culture. It's much appreciated.

QUOTE: To Jeff Lindsay. That was that biggest mistake that Vang Pao made in his life. maikue yang

to jeff: i do have a bitter attitude. i have it because of you and your kind..you'll have it too if your people was betrayed by HMONGS...left to died...when you said "Don't make being a victim your focus in life - you will get no where" sorry but thats NOT TRUE... it makes me a strong person and it makes me work even hard to get to my goals...It's funny how you and your kind can be bitter and angry toward Iraqis for the war there...but i should forgive and forget about what had happen in vietnam war...and another thing being nice and saying thank you gets you nowhwere in this country...you have to be mean and selfish..that's what you and your kind have taught me.. UNQUOTE//

I disagree with you. You ARE to bitter to talk ANY right sense. What you say is all out of opinion and ANGER making US hmong people look like a kind full of bitterness. We gladly fought along side with the "other kind" as you refer them to.

In fact, YOU are just as bad as them making stereotypical conclusions such as this to even DARE to comment so unprecisely.

Yes us hmong have suffered, but we came here to america to get away. You can say we're still suffering but hell, who isn't?? You think only WE have it bad.

We are all equal. We might not be as rich, but we hmong work to get there and many of us have become successful.

It's people like YOU that make me ashamed of being hmong.

You guys just don't get it do you? Jeff Lindsay made this site out of her own will. It wasn't for profit or because she HATES us.

It's people like YOU that make us hmong seem so bitter. You go around and turn people who look at you in a good light away by saying "You think this makes up for everything"

This is why whites, blacks, hispanics, etc. look away from us hmong people. We're too bitter, we ask too many questions when people like Jeff Lindsay want to help us. We question their goodness.

Why?? Most of us are too caught up on the bad side.

I am hmong too. Whatever has happend in our history, it happend. You can't go around complaining and shoving it into every white american's face. You wouldn't like it!

If you're talking about betrayal it's only the hmong people who have betrayed themselves. They have failed to see everything in a different light.

You think because of some white americans that we suffered so much? Look at us! We worship the spirits!

If you were God, would you want to bless your children who look to someone else for help?

I'm not just speaking this from a christian's POV.

We never had land. We don't HAVE a country to claim our own.. But why do we need it? WE DON'T.

You want us to suffer MORE? Have you noticed all the little countries trying to be ooverrun by bigger and more powerful countries? You see how HARD it is? We're actually BLESSED to not have a country.

Our country is in our hearts. It's OUR home. WE are the hmong people. The FREE MAN.

America is our home. We will fight for america as if it was our own.

Your bitterness and your attitude was NOT caused by "the other kind" It was out of your own heart. There is a majestrate that sits in your heart that determines everything you feel and think.

It's YOU who made yourself so bitter. If you just let go and have faith in God, maybe things will start changing. BUT NO, us hmong people have hmong people like YOU who can't let go of a grudge.

my Hmong People are important to me. Chai Vang is my uncle.

I've met him a couple of times. What he did was wrong, but I believe it WAS out of self-defense. The first degree murders should have been second degress murders.

I even CRIED when I heard they found him guilty. He is my uncle and I will not be shamed of his name.

He has goodness in him, and him staying behind bars can be viewed in a better light. He can be qualified for parole which I'm praying he is.

For the hunters who died, some of them deserved to die and some of them didn't. But what is done is done right? You can't bring them back. Their families are just as bitter as you.

Place yourself in their boots. You may be upset about my uncle being put behind bars, but if you were in their shoes, you'd probably want the guy who killed your dad in jail too!

It's your BITTERNESS and HATRED that makes you think this way. You ALL are so blinded.

Me, standing where I am, You, MaiKue Yang, are just as low as "the other kind" who really do despise our kind. Because you in return are doing the same thing, which makes YOU as low as them.

You'd never understand though. Not until you give yourself a reality check. Not when you're still full of anger and bitterness.

You'll just reply to this and argue your way through. I, however, will not argue with you. I made my points clear.

You have no right to stand on your ground where you are right now and say all this BS.

We all of suffered. We ALL have paid the prices. Because the color of our skin, the color of our eyes, the history we have, YOU people separate us and put us under categories. AND YOU are just the same.

We may be different on the outside, but in the inside, your heart is just as black as the other "kind". The way you say "your and your kind" you are just as racist.

ANYWAYS,

Nice pictures Jeff Lindsay :)

Nyob zoo Jeff Lindsay,

I don't know why but for some reasons I admire your site about the Hmong people so much. It seems to be that each time I search for the Hmong topics, your page is the first topic that comes up for the hmong people and I do appreciate that so much. I always want to write to you to comment and compliment your site but I never have the guts to. However, something just touch me at this moment that I should let you know how important you are to the Hmong community and especially being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Out of all the churches that I went to and have came to know, everyone of them has been great but through your site and you as representing the church also makes the church even a better church. It brings the light of the church to the world that the church do cares especially someone like you who are very involved in the Hmong community. I believe this will eventually help many younger and even older Hmong to acknowledge and convert to the church. The reason I say this is because I love to help our community too and hoping one day the Hmong people will be successful as any other nationality in the world.

I notice that you have recieved so many emails and comments from everyone and I can't believe myself to see that much comments you have here and I actually finally finished reading it. WOW! Anyways, I know that there are good comments and bad comments but you are the light of our hmong people and a great representative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I really appreciate your effort and time to do your research on this site and help bring the light to the Hmong. For those who understands will thank you however those that doesn't know who you are will say many bad things and I do want to appologized about that to you. I rather have you keep up your good work about that Hmong people because you really did a wonderful work.

For myself, I think America is the best country. Every nationalities or countries all over the world look up to America as an idle. Everyone wants to come here to be free. To myself, I am grateful that the americans have helped us come here to the United States of America. Look at all the suffering that our Hmong people went through since 5000 years ago until now. We are a very unique and ancient people. We have been through so much that seems like we weren't even exist now. Because of people like you, Jeff, makes us Hmong people have a voice and the power to adjust and improve and appreciate of who we are. Like I said earlier, for those that read this and understands will understand however those that doesn't will never. So again, I appreciate your kindness and effort to take your time to help many of our younger Hmong generations understand our culture a little better. And for us Hmong, we should be grateful that we are here in america to have this freedom, this agency, to choose what we want to do in our individual life to help improve our lives. God, our Heavenly Father, created us to be different to learn the differences and to know how to love one to another. We cannot just love our own kind but to love others as well.

Jeff, I am also an LDS member, and I will always be an LDS member and a leader to our youth and the church because for your examples have gave me strenght to help accomplish my goals. Hope this will touch my Hmong brothers and sisters out there heart that things will change in the ways you think.

And before I go, I do want to testify that the things Jeff Lindsay comments about our Hmong people are true and positive because he loves us and want to support us in every ways. Just because he's different doesn't mean that he's different. He's just a human being just like we are. And if we think twice then we will notice that. Hope you all understands. If not, oh well. Think again.

Thanks again.

In regards to Maikue Yang- You presented yourself in such an ignorant and ill-mannered way, that I can’t help the fact but pity you for such grudges. I’m not here to criticize you, I just felt the need to point out how you’re just the same as any other intolerant person, classifying “Your kind, my kind of people” as a whole by the color of their skin. Sorry, but that’s just ridiculously hypocritical of you, don’t you think? I’m just asking you to be more open-minded, if you will. Anyway, I believe Jasmine Cha did a well job on explaining that on her part. And lastly, thanks to Jess Lindsay for creating such a resourceful site. Not only for the Hmongs themselves, but for everyone else.

Jeff, thank you for telling the world the truth about the Hmong.

I was born during the 1975 era, I consider myself the Vietname War baby boomer. I didn't know much about the war until I went to school here and learn from my history class, but still confused. After I finished reading "Tragic Mountains" I have an idea on why and how we involed with the war. I also would like to thank, Jane Hamilton Merritt, for such wonderful book. I feel prouded for all the Hmong soldiers & American Ravens fighter, whose fighting a losing war. At the same time I cry & feel so bad for the Hmong, when I read Jane's book. I think we fought the wrong war at the wrong time. To me, it looks like the only people that care about the Hmong, are Jerry Daniel, Jane Hamilton Merritt, and you, Jeff.

For my fellow Hmong brothers & sisters, if you still interest about the Vietnam War, please read "THE RAVENS THE MEN WHO FLEW IN AMERICA'S SECRET WAR IN LAOS"

Washington and UN ignore the Hmong since the communist took over Laos and today they still ignore the Hmog. I'm sure they realized that they're the one who created the war. Well, this guilt will be inside their head for the rest of their life. You would think that Vietnam War was a lesson for them not to make another mistake, but guess not, look at Iraq now. This is how I feel about the US government.

I want to say a couple of words about the hunting incident. I want to sent my condolence to the victim's families, everyone of us will die some day, but this is not the way your love one should end their life. And for Chai Vang's families, that it's wrong to take the lives of some one, even though he did it for self-defense. So for both families, please lets not pointing finger at each other's face. Let the judge and jurys handle the case, which they already did.

Hello! First and foremost, I would like to thank you for taking the time to appreciate the Hmongs. Thank you very much for this wonderful site and interest you've taken in on the Hmong ethnic. My name is Jenny Yang and I'm from Fresno, California. I'm happily married for about 1 year now and I'm 21 years-old.

I was reading Jasmine Cha's comment and totally disagree with what she mentioned. She has her rights to be mad, but she didn't think it through that without the aid of the US then for us (the new generation..born here, raised here all our lives) and the survivors of the Secret War (our parents and relatives)would not have made it here where we are today!

I was skimming through some of the comments and came across your question about southern cali. if there was any event happening....Will in the summer time there's a few, but the best time to come is during the winter time. It is when Fresno has its Hmong New Year. The event takes place at the Fresno Fairgrounds and starts the day after Christmas up to the first of January (12/26-01/01).

Well, if there are any special interest you would like to know, you can always search the web. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jenny Yang

Hello Mr. Lindsay. Please do not let ignorant and stupid people discourage you from doing wonderful work on behalf of the Hmong people. =) Your site is a GREAT gift to the Hmong community. Rest assured that I, along with many other Hmongs, greatly appreciate your sincerity and kindness toward the Hmongs. May our thanks inspire you to continue doing what you are doing.

Though a bit late (October at the time of this posting), I believe there are only a few Hmong festivals in southern California due to the small population of Hmongs living there. Being a former residence of southern California myself (constantly mistaken for being Chinese and greeted with "Ni hao ma?" and replying "Nyob zoo os."), the only cities that have a reasonable population of Hmongs are Santa Ana, Banning, Long Beach, and maybe a few other cities that I am not aware of.

Best wishes, and take care.

Thank you for developing this website to enhance our knowledge and discover what kind of people exist out there.

I want to dedicate this message to all visitors of this site...especially the young to middle-aged Hmong. “Before you want others to recognize and respect you, you have to recognize and respect yourself.” It starts with you. Everyone who is smart would not use anger to solve his or her problems. I see a lot of Hmong people in this country who is highly educated but it seems they are not smart enough yet. I am talking about educated Hmong people who have forgotten their past. Everything has a beginning and an end. Young people though, seem to forget how their beginning started. So when this happens, it means education did nothing to enhance our wisdom. Think about it. How does it happen that elders back then, with their lack of education, have the ability to defend what they love for decades on end? To compare our generation to our parent's generation, we would not have made it for even a year if we had to face the kind of situation they had to go through. It explains that our generation has gone very far in terms of education but not in terms of wisdom and smartness. Therefore, even though we might be highly educated, in order for others to respect us and in order for us to become smarter, we still have to pay attention to our parents.

Our parents aren't that dumb even if they are not educated because they left themselves two doors to play with. With their situation back then, they either lost or won. But when they lost, they lost in a dignified manner, in which others would respect them. Our youths though are not smart enough. They only leave themselves with one door to play with. Therefore, when they are faced with a challenging situation like their parents, they don’t have many options. That leaves them with anger and bitterness for not being able to deal with the situation. So, what has education taught them, not much because they have not found the other special ingredient to make them true professionals. Youths these days are simply novices. This leaves us with the very valuable lesson that the choices in which our parents made which resulted in huge sacrifices of death is not a mistake at all.

Remember, there has to be a beginning and an end. Have our youths thought about working together in solving the problems and paying the price for the suffering our parents went through to get us this far? Face it, we are Hmong and will always be Hmong. Take it or leave it, you are still Hmong. So, remember how you got this far, who got you here, the sacrifices made, and tears that have been shed in order for you to reach this step in life. Always remember your past. It is time we worked together to pay this great price we still owe to our parents. I am one who has not forgotten and am still working towards paying my part of the debt.

Here is a very simple question I want to leave with Hmong youths out there. When a mean dog attacks someone, do you think about running from the situation or helping out that person in trouble? Now, put yourself in their shoes. If you were the one being attacked by that mean dog, would you want someone to help you?

I am an Australian who goes yearly to Thailand. My sympathies are with the Hmong peaple and i think it is dispicable the way the US Government and the UN are ignoring the plight of those Hmong still on Laos. I am surprised to read your stories of unhappiness and not nice treatment in America, but at least you are all safe, so please be thankful for that, you can sleep at night and know you will wake up safe and sound in the morning.Once again i have to say that i feel that your peaple in Laos have been deserted by America whose government does not seem to understand the sacrifices you made for her during that war. Thailand is a poor but large country so i think Taksin (the Thai president) should let you have a small province to live and make your own home, possibly in the South somewhere, All the finantial aspect could easily be managed by the USA, they can always find money for wars! In return you could become good citizens of Thailand and i am sure your young men could become EXCELLENT soldiers as you have proven in the past,

  • serving in their army.Thank you Jeff for your time and efforts in making the plight of the Hmong peaple more public. I can understand their bitterness and feeling of desertion, but time will heal.I have learned a lot about the Hmong from reading the letters in this site and will certianly try to do something to help the refugees however small when i return to Thailand in the new year. Good luck to all of you and try to be happy for your childrens sake .........Dave L.

Great website Jeff, I have enjoyed it! (I hope you don't mind me posting this open letter here):

To all Hmongs living in Northern California...

My wife and I recently moved to California from the South. She is Thai and I am white. I have enjoyed learning about my wife's Thai culture and other Asian cultures in the five years since we have been married. I have learned a good deal about the Hmong people from the different websites, and would like to make friends with any Hmongs out there in the CA Bay area that would like to talk about the culture, language, customs, etc. I would like for us to go to a New Year Festival if anyone could give us a clue as to where locally to go. Anyone wanting to contact me can do so at mscfiero@yahoo.com

Thanks, and best wishes to all Hmongs who read this! Michael S. Coffey Santa Clara, CA

WOW! I am speechless. This website is exceptionally well layed out with information and pictures. I can't believe I ended up here from wikipedia.com. Mr. Jeff Lindsay, I want to thank you for all the work you have done about the Hmong people. Being a second generation Hmong I don't even know that much about my culture, but after reading all the information and research you have done made me feel good. I attend a small private college in Minnesota and the majority of the population is caucasian. It's really hard trying to explain what Hmong is and how they ended up dispersing all over, but I think your website could chnage that. Again, thank you SO much. Toua T. Vang

Hello Jeff and All Hmong People!

I salute you for your great work. And all the Hmong have done to survive as a people. Like the Rhodesians, UNITA, Kurds, Karen of Burma, Montagnards, Afrikaners, South Sudan and others, the Hmong are a great remnant.

I have a question. After my series on Wnd.com about the Hmong was published in 1999, there were hearings in Congress with Ben Gilman and Carl Bernard of Special Forces Operation White Star fame. I heard that former President Clinton signed an Executive Order or Presidential Directive (PDD) to exempt the Hmong from the ESL requirement needed in order to become citizens of the USA. I am asking exactly how many Hmong came to the USA as a result of the work of myself, Carl Bernard (a Colonel and great man who led Operation White Star in Laos in the early 1960's), Congressman Ben Gilman, the late Senator Paul Wellstone and our good friend Bill Clinton. I have heard numbers ranging from 3,500 to 35,000. How many Hmong have come to the U.S. each year since 1999, 2000, 2001 on to 2005? I would be most happy to know the truth. Many Hmong are moving to the Ozarks and I saw an article about them last week in Branson, Missouri. There is an amazing European remnant there and the Hmong will be among very good people. If anyone can answer the questions above, please contact me at montecristorising@hotmail.com God bless Jeff and all the Hmong people. I love the Hmong people so much, because the Hmong people are so good!

Hi, first off I would like to say thank you to Jeff for taking the time to make this page and help us speak out for who we are. Now going through this I read some interesting opinions, here's my opinion. To all of you out there who says that they get mad when a white man tells them to go back to thier own country. Here's my advice to you. There are always gonna ignorant people, so therefor you should not let it bother you to much. You can choose to be ignorant back if you want, but why? It is all on how you want make your life. Don't let someones comment get into your train of thought to lose your motivation in life. I'm not being passive or scared im just stating that it is ridiculos to start or stir something thats isn't nesecessary. On to next thoughts. Ohh TO HERBOI and his Quote "WHY WEREN'T WE MENTION IN ANY OF THE U.S ROCORD UNTIL THE LATE 80'S?" (Loas was also not inculded) Well the simple fact is that reason for it is because we didn't make a name for ourselves until the 80's after the war was over no one took action to say something about it. No one spoke out for us. If u want to know about us Hmong people befor the 80's maybe you should stop asking and start doing take the time to and research it. There are many things about the hmong people before the 80's. Last comment about America and who was actually here frist, now correct me if im wrong but I believe I read some where that the Vikings where befor the indians they just never claimed it. So therefore the indians(native americans) where not the first ones here.

reply to khue xiong:

yes, there are many different people that came from all over the world to this country. there can be times where each and every nationality may claim that they were the first to be here in america. just for an example if i was asian or should i say a hmong descendant then I would say the the hmong were the vikings that once lived out in the north which is now the USSR area and have once migrated to the other side through the Berring Straight (whatever you spell it) which is located on the very tip of USSR and Alaska. Then they migrated southward to the northern america and southern america. then there were conflicts between families and tribes and then start to break up into different clans. however the majority of us hmong as we chose to stayed in asia and fought the chinese, we have mixed with different chinese clans and become to look more like the chinese when we lost the war. plus if you are a person who likes to do geneology or research of you ancestors or just like to study the bibles then you would know more facts. for an example, jesus was born and died in jeruselum which is in asia. plus there were also another group there that were called the neiphi that have sailed the ship around the world which landed in the southern america. just like the hmongs, as generation pass on, different families want different things and then fought because of conflict thoughts. one became good and the other became bad. plus if you like to study to scriptures as in the genesis, noah was well known in the hmong history in china. hmong which were refer to miao in china was once telling missionaries that they knew of noah which was refered to nuah even before missionary introduce jesus and god. his wife and family for the amount of 8 people were the only ones survived from the flood. plus even chinese has a chinese charater that representt ship was the the number 8 on a boat means ship. cool huh. seth, one of nuah's son, left the brothers and came to asia which form the asian looks. and as for the other brothers, they have one down in africa which became african, one in europe which became european. and so forth. so now do you see the whole story. i have to go to work but i can give you the refernces where i get these informations so you can continue on you research ok my hmong brothers. plus let's not catergorize ourselves from others because like i say earlier we all came from the same parent which is adam and eve. we all came to america for the promise land that was once promised for freedom. we all chose to be here in this wonderful world to be tested and hope to return back to our heveanly father which is god above. peace out yall and god bless that you may hear my words.
