Some scientists in Britain recently presented the results of their research on dust mites, as discussed in an interesting news story from Nature.com. These things abound by the millions in our homes and especially in human beds, where the moisture level allows them to live and multiply easily. Based on their work, they recommend that you allow your bed to air out each day to reduce moisture levels (low moisture kills mites), and they also recommend sleeping longer to raise the temperature of the bed to a level that kills the mites off (elevated temperatures kill the mites as well). But what about those of us without the luxury of sleeping in? Hey, scientists, you forgot something simple: ELECTRIC BLANKETS. So here's the Jeff Lindsay cure for dust mites: put an electric blanket on your bed and crank up the heat for a couple hours. This should help kill off the mites in the bed and reduce allergy problems in your home.
Execute mites not with the electric chair, but with the electric blanket.
