Google Censors News in China - Why Not US, Too?

posted Thursday, 23 September 2004

A news story in WorldNetDaily.com, "Google censoring search results in China:
Query doesn't bring up news stories critical of Beijing Communists," shows that Google is going beyond the normal state-imposed censorship in many countries. In other dictatorships, governments may block access to certain sites or stories, but Google users can at least see the search results, though some links may not be accessible. But in China, Google has gone the extra mile and acts to prevent stories and links from even showing up in the search results to keep China's captive citizens even more in the dark.

What's so special about China? Why can't we get our search results censored, too? We'd all have a lot less stress if we didn't have to encounter endless news stories about Kerry, Bush, and Rather every time we try to find serious news. Or maybe they are censoring: everything but fluff.

Our city used to have a newspaper that ONLY reported GOOD news. Naturally, it went out of business years ago.
