New York's Guinea Pig Kids: Victims of a Government Out of Control
A chilling story from the BBC covers the tragedy of children in New York that were secretly being used as guinea pigs in the testing of experimental AIDS drugs. Parents did not know that their kids were being used as guinea pigs, and those who wanted to get them off the program were threatened with losing their kids to state care. It's a classic case of a government that puts itself above the law, and above its powerless subjects. When people are just cattle to a power-hungry government, anything can happen - including turning the most helpless citizens into laboratory rats for testing. (Thanks to Walter Reade for the link.)
Constant vigilance is the price of freedom. You just can't trust local or Federal agencies. Instead, every agency and every politician needs constant scrutiny and tight legal restraints to limit their power. That's what the Constitution was all about, but it is largely ignored these days as every agency and branch of government usurps more and more power.
