The Wall Street Journal's front page on June 7 has an article, "Pentagon Report Sought to Justify Use of Torture." Jess Bravin describes information in the classified documents from March 2003 showing that the Bush Administration was exploring technicalities in the law to allow them to use various forms of torture, based on an "ends justifies the means" mentality. Rumsfeld himself ordered that the document be classified as secret.
This story is also being picked up in other sources, such as Asia Times ("Torture: Another blow for Rumsfeld?").
It's wrong to put all the blame on a few soldiers who were clearly carrying out policies devised at the top. I voted for Bush, but this abuse of human rights cannot be tolerated, nor can we tolerate the erosion of civil liberties in this nation that can allow anyone to be incarcerated indefinitely without a trial just by calling them an "enemy combatant." Rumsfeld must reisgn at a minimum, but American citizens need to stand up and call for a return to Constitutional principles, and impose great restraints on any man who would be king, whether it's Bush or Kerry.
