The Criminal Neglect of Our Borders: The Threat Is Confirmed

posted Saturday, 19 February 2005
For years, especially since 9-11, many Americans have been screaming about our porous borders and demanding to know why our President refuses to seal the border to keep terrorists out. We want to know why we are sending troops to the other side of the world to allegedly protect America, when the greatest threat we face is from terrorist attacks here on American soil. We want to know why President Bush would rather keep Mexico happy than protect Americans from foreign agents who can easily walk across the border. We want to know why he can ask us to spend $300 billion or more on Iraq, but says the budget won't allow him to add the 2,000 border agents that he already agreed to add (in the face of intense pressure to do something to even slightly increase border security).

The threat of terrorists coming across the Mexican border is confirmed in a recent news story from The New York Times. Here is an excerpt:

U.S. Aides Cite Worry on Qaeda Infiltration From Mexico

By DOUGLAS JEHL

Published: February 17, 2005

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 - New intelligence information strongly suggests that Al Qaeda has considered infiltrating the United States through the Mexican border, top government officials told Congress on Wednesday.

In a wide-ranging assessment of threats to American security, including those posed by Iran and North Korea, the officials also said intelligence indicated that terrorist organizations remained intent on obtaining and using devastating weapons against the United States.

"It may only be a matter of time before Al Qaeda or another group attempts to use chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons," Porter J. Goss, the new director of central intelligence, told the Senate Intelligence Committee.
