Wisconsin's Voter ID Controversy: How Stupid Are We?

posted Saturday, 21 May 2005

In Wisconsin, Governor Jim Doyle recently vetoed legislation to reduce voter fraud. He said that requiring ID to vote was a bad policy that would hurt the poor and elderly. Shortly after that, his party pushed for regulations requiring those who purchase certain cold medicines to have photo ID. So it's OK to require ID to get medicine, but not to vote?

This further increased pressure on the increasingly controversial Governor to do something about Wisconsin's voter fraud problem, so Governor Doyle responded with a counterproposal for his own style of "voter ID." Under his proposal, you can show up at a voting booth and vote if you have any one of numerous kinds of identification, OR JUST SIGN YOUR NAME AND GIVE FOUR RANDOM NUMBERS. Actually, those four random numbers should be the last four digits of your social security number, but who's going to check? His so-called voter ID is simply an attempt to fool Wisconsin voters. How stupid do you think we are?

So just how stupid are we? If we let Governor Doyle get away with his voter fraud plan, we're pretty stupid indeed. Democracy is NOT helped by voter fraud - but obviously some politicians are.
