US Military Operations to Be Outsourced to China?

posted Saturday, 30 July 2005

In a move aimed at bringing defense spending under control and making America's military more cost effective than ever, President Bush announced today that most US military bases and other defensive operations will be outsourced to China. "Our global partner China has demonstrated that they can deliver far more for a given amount of defense spending than we have been able to do under our current cost structure," President Bush explained. "Soldiers, generals, military bases, tanks, planes, and missiles are all available at much lower costs than in the United States." While many US servicemen will keep their jobs, an estimated $500 billion a year will be saved by relocating them and other operations to China, where, according to Bush, "military personnel can enjoy a reasonable standard of living while being paid fair Chinese wages."

While the proposal has broad bilateral support, and strong support from Wall Street, Bush's proposal was met with skepticism from a few members of the Republican Party. Senator Arlen Specter questioned the wisdom of outsourcing to China, proposing that partnering with Mexico might be more attractive and could help strengthen Hispanic support for the GOP.
