Read the Label on Wound Treatment Remedies: Use Your Own Onion!

posted Sunday, 1 January 2006
Have you seen the new scar prevention creams being sold at Wal-Mart and many other stores? I was about to buy one small tube of Mederma for $12 at Wal-Mart, but first I read the ingredients. It was ordinary lotion ingredients plus onion bulb extract. $12 for a little onion extract? Forget it! I went home and used a few pennies of onion myself. I applied some onion juice to a healing burn wound that I have, followed by treatment with Vaseline, olive oil, or lotion to add some barrier function. I've been doing this several times a day. It seems to have helped. But it's not clear that the onion treatment is really any better than simply using a petrolatum-based product alone. See the article from Dermatology TImes, " Onion doesn't top petrolatum for wound-healing." On the other hand, there are some people who have really been helped by the onion-based products such as Mederma. Also see some information on the Mederma product at Epinions.com.

For now, though, I'm keeping the onion treatment idea as one of my home remedies.

It's amazing what sorts of snake oil they try to sell us! Remember massage will help break up scar tissue, too: gentle circles with the pads of your fingers done regularly.

Be well!
