PowerLine vs. the soon-to-be-late CBS News: The (Nearly Dead) Power of Free Speech

posted Thursday, 9 September 2004

Many thanks to PowerLine for exposing the apparent use of fraudulent documents by CBS News in an effort to attack President Bush. I am not a big fan of President Bush (even though I voted for him, the erosion of the Constitution, massively wasteful spending, Haliburton, etc., all get to me), but am disgusted by blatant dishonesty in the media.

PowerLine shows just how powerful the Internet can be in opposing the media juggernaut and letting some truth slip out every now and then.

But PowerLine, aren't you worried that McCain-Feingold might eventually force you to shut down within 60 days of an election? The latest edition of The Economist notes that Pres. Bush has denounced all 527s (special issue groups that run ads before an election without directly campaigning for a candidate, allowing them to maintain a little of their freedom of speech thanks to a loophole in McCain-Feingold) and is willing to go to court to shut down 527 groups like the Swiftvets and the more numerous pro-Democrat groups that are spending money on ads. After the 527s go, who will be next? Why is the President, the man who has sworn to uphold the Constitution, so bent on shutting down political free speech, and why are conservatives so quiet about their eroding liberties? There should be no law preventing private citizens from banding together and spending their money on campaign ads. If pro-chouce or pro-life groups want to run ads for or against Bush, that should be their right. It is their right (see Article 1 of the Bill of Rights). The McCain-Feingold law leaves the power of influencing political opinion in the hands of the media and the politicians. It is a corrupt law that must be overturned.
