America's Missing Leadership: We Aren't Ready for Disaster

posted Thursday, 1 September 2005

The tragedy in New Orleans is overwhelming. It's compounded by the what strikes me as an embarrassing lack of leadership in this country. It was clear some time ago that New Orleans would be hit by a hurricane. It was also clear that there would be a lot of chaos and looting and humans in desperate need. Where were the thousands of soldiers in the streets from day one to bring order and food? Why wasn't a plan already in place and executed quickly to help stabilize the city? Bodies are decomposing, looters are running rampant, and now we're getting a wave of camera appearances from leaders rather than decisive action.

What would happen in a terrorist attack? Americans need to understand that we will not be able to rely on the government to step in and act decisively and intelligently. We may be caught unprepared and live through hellish chaos should our enemies launch a serious attack against one or more of our cities.

Are you prepared? Do you have what you will need to survive in the event of another catastrophe?

And how ashamed I am of my fellow citizens, looting like common criminals in the streets of New Orleans, as if nothing belongs to anybody else.
