Shoe tree at University of Wisconsin, Green Bay

A "shoe tree" I encountered at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay on April 9, 2005, near the sports center. I'd like to know the story behind this prank.

We have a shoe tree at the summer camp I'm a counselor at. It's filled with shoes by the year end...some of them mine unintentionally. lolol

I recently graduated from UWGB. The university encourages graduating seniors to throw shoes into the tree.
