In the Persian Gulf War, American POWs tortured by Saddam Hussein's regime sued the regime and won a $1 billion settlement in US courts. But the Bush Administration has stepped in and prevented the POWs from collecting. It's an ugly move, but President Bush has not backed down. These POWs feel betrayed and used. President Bush says we need that money to rebuild Iraq, but as of Jan. 2005, it still hasn't been spent.
The story was first reported in 2003 in sources such as Intervention Magazine or Australia's The Age, in the story "Tortured POWs Face Fight to Collect Payout":
"No amount of money can truly compensate these brave men and women for the suffering that they went through at the hands of a truly brutal regime," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.
So let's not give them any, eh?
