White House: Iraqi WMDs "Fake But Accurate"

posted Thursday, 13 January 2005

The search for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction has now ended, yielding nothing to support the reasons initially given by the White House for the invasion. But President Bush assures us that the invasion was essential, that it was justified, and that it was "absolutely worth it." Why? Because the reports of Iraqi WMDs, though fake, were still somehow accurate - at least in spirit. Sure, Saddam was a brute, like most of the other tyrants we give foreign aid to, and one can always hope that toppling a tyrant makes the world a better place. Well, one can hope. But America would not have been willing to sacrifice the lives of its young men and women and spend huge sums to just throw out a bum on the other side of the world. We went because, in the midst of 9-11 hysteria, we were told that we were at great risk from attack by Iraq's WMDs. Now "fake but accurate" just doesn't cut it.

As long as we are embracing and funding allies of terror like Mahmoud Abbas, right-hand henchman of the grandfather of modern terrorism, our war on terror can best be described with one word, not three: "Fake."
