One of my favorite publications on education,
Education Next, has a good article on how the "New Math" and related textbooks are hindering math education in the U.S. It's "
An A-Maze-ing Approach To Math" by Barry Garelick. Have you examined the math textbooks your children use in school? Do you know what philosophy is guiding the approach to teaching in your schools? If it's based on "discovery learning" where kids come up with their own "solutions" rather than learning the skills they need to succeed, then you might want to get a decent textbook and begin supplementing your child's education now.
